What is it and how does it work?

CoolSculpting®, a form of cryolipolysis, uses a variety of rounded cooling suction paddles to pull out loose skin then crystalise and dismantle fat cells (which are unable to withstand ultra-low temperatures), crushing everything from bra bulge and love handles to sagging under-the-chin skin. While the fat cells freeze, the skin remains free from injury.

After the procedure the fat slowly dissipates (it’s naturally eliminated by the body’s lymphatic system) across a period of around six to 12 weeks.

Which body parts is it designed for?

Coolsculpting® offers success across a range of body parts – delivering a trimming effect on the abdomen, thighs, flanks, upper arms, back and chin. It can provide as much as 25-30% fat reduction in those localised areas.

Who is it primarily good for?

Because CoolSculpting® is designed for subtle, strategic contouring, it’s best suited to those (aged 18+) already at an ideal weight and who are seeking to streamline their figure or battle a specific pocket of bulge that’s been resistant to dietary changes or exercise. It doesn’t suit those looking for significant weight loss.

How long will it last for and what’s the downtime?

Because it kills off fat cells, the results of CoolSculpting® can last indefinitely. However, subsequent weight gain after the procedure may override the initial treatment.

Typically, there is very little downtime with CoolSculpting®, but patients should anticipate some swelling and soreness for at least two days.

Please note that all treatment responses and recovery times are dependent on the individual patient.

What other treatments does it work well with?

What else should I know?

CoolSculpting® is for people looking for definite but modest improvements, for whom small stubborn pockets of fat present a persistent problem.

The therapy is performed using a single paddle per individual body part, with each referred to as a ‘cycle’. Several cycles are usually required to achieve the desired impact, but multiple cycles can be performed sequentially on the same day, meaning larger areas can be treated first, followed by the finessing of smaller zones.

CoolSculpting® doesn’t involve the use of any artificial substances, making it an ideal procedure for those who prefer a natural treatment plan.

FAQS

Here are a few final things that you might like to know before taking things forward. If you have any other questions we haven’t thought of yet, no problem! Please email us at hello@thelovelyclinic.co.uk and one of the team will get back to you as quickly as they possibly can.

Does it hurt?

Patients may find the process uncomfortable when the suction paddles used to isolate and freeze the fatty tissues are initially deployed, and also when those isolated areas are massaged by the therapist.

When does it start to work?

The results show anywhere between six weeks and three months.

WHAT CAN GO WRONG?

Some patients experience intense pulling, tugging, pinching or tingly cramps during treatment, prior to the numbness kicking in. Following the procedure some people may suffer from red skin, cramping or very tender skin. There is also a risk of late onset pain, burns, hyperpigmentation, and paradoxical hyperplasia (a rare complication of CoolSculpting® that has the paradoxical result: an overgrowth of fatty tissue) but all are rare.
