Dr Sarah Tonks says...

“When you consider how much people regularly spend on shampoos and conditioners, which are nice but only offer a superficial salve, scalp facials are well worth it. They also stimulate the scalp, encourage cellular turnover and reduce inflammation, whilst delivering beautiful-looking hair at the same time, making them a very worthwhile investment.”

What are they and how do they work?

The latest trend in high-level haircare, scalp facials are a logical progression for those who want to go beyond the limitations of a traditional shampoo and conditioner regime for more exceptional and long-lasting results.

A deep-cleansing-meets-exfoliation-plus-hydration treatment, a scalp facial involves a small pen-like device which, similar to the facial equivalent, uses hydrodermabrasion to scrape away the upper layers of skin and infuse the scalp with an enriching serum. This removes dry patches and sebum (the sticky, oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands), and the build-up of natural oils from styling products. The device releases nourishing fluid and extracts excess gunk in concert, with different tips for multiple types of exfoliation. Treatments include topical versions of the types of solutions used in Mesotherapy, including biotin, niacinamide aka vitamin B3, which stimulates keratin (the main constituent of hair fibre), and peptides.

Soothing, but more intense than a regular head massage, the process encourages blood flow, to stimulate growth while triggering endorphins.

Which body parts are they designed for?

The hair and scalp.

What are they primarily good for?

Scalp facials hold universal appeal, thanks to providing people of all ages with shinier, fuller hair and removing irritating itchiness. However, they are particularly good for people who regularly colour their hair or have had hair extensions, or are suffering from thinning hair or outright hair loss, including in relation to pregnancy or the menopause.

How long will it last for and what’s the downtime?

We recommend four sessions, at intervals of four weeks, plus regular sessions to maintain your results. There is no downtime for scalp facials.

What other treatments do they work well with?

What else should I know?

This treatment is carried out by an experienced therapist.
