What are they and how do they work?

Sciton JOULE® Light & Laser Technology Treatments harness thermal energy for either an intensely rejuvenating exfoliation or to heat the skin from within to promote contraction, spurring tightness. These treatments counter discolouration, redness and/or textural inconsistencies, and encourage healthier new cells to grow in their place.

This is a series of treatments that can be made as gentle or intense as desired, depending on the results and downtime you are after. At TLC we approach this field of treatment via four different types of therapies to support a wide range of skincare conditions and desires:

ClearSilk®:

An excellent entry point for those looking for a quick treatment with minimal downtime (ideal for an event), ClearSilk® is the lightest touch laser therapy, best considered a supercharged skin-booster – addressing fine lines, wrinkles, redness, light scarring and general revitalisation. Designed to counterbalance uneven texture, dullness, rosacea and acne scarring – just a little more gently than its counterparts mentioned below – it works by using infrared sensors to monitor skin temperature, assessing exactly where to deliver the appropriate energy. It’s applicable to anywhere on the face and body.

BBL® HEROic:

Broadband Light, High Energy Rapid Output (BBL ® HEROic ™) is part of the intense pulsed light (IPL) family of procedures – one of the only varieties of light therapy shown in a study to have the potential to rejuvenate – not just remove – ageing skin cells at a DNA level. Unlike the more spot-targeted beams of traditional laser work, it scatters thermal energy across the skin to swiftly treat a broad area in one go. Focused on delivering a general improvement – such as diminishing discolouration, smoothing textural variations, countering rosacea, sun damage, active acne, persistent flushing and age spots – BBL ® HEROic ™ can be used almost anywhere on the body.

The tool uses proprietary technology designed to deliver a smooth and consistent motion as it’s swept across the skin, giving an incredibly fast treatment, with no gaps or overlaps in the shots of the BBL (often a problem with other systems), and comes with a suite of filters relating to different wavelengths of light, enabling us to customise the treatment to meet the individual needs of each patient.

ClearV®:

ClearV ® is also a relatively intensive, zone-targeting therapy dedicated to conditions connected to the vascular system – treating visible blood vessels (on or just below the skin), including spider veins, broken capillaries, rosacea and even port wine stains. It’s especially good for treating the blue blood vessels located around the eye or veins on the body. Using special LED lights to illuminate the target area, laser pulses are absorbed by the unwanted vessels, closing them for good. The vessels are then naturally eliminated by the body over time. This treatment can also be used anywhere on the face or body.

HALO ®:

HALO ® is a smart Hybrid Fractional Laser treatment that’s more in-depth than BBL®HEROic because it’s designed to deliver a weightier result – redressing more obstinate or deep-seated skin conditions such as scarring or lesions as well as wrinkles, fine lines, sun damage and large pores. A treatment that simultaneously resurfaces and tightens the skin, it uses both ablative and non-ablative beams (ablative lasers remove the top layer of skin while non-ablative ones heat the underlying tissue without harming the surface to produce new collagen) to fully zone in on the designated treatment area. It can be used almost anywhere on the body and face.

This tool uses unique measuring and mapping technology to hit exactly the right spot in and within the skin, delivering precision heat energy.

ProFractional™ & ZoomScan® :

Designed to give comparable results to a deeper resurfacing procedure – but without the associated downtime – the ProFractional™ and ZoomScan ® treatments use dual mode Erbium YAG lasers to deliver intensive, highly targeted resurfacing, but with very little thermal conduction, so the surrounding areas of skin remain unaffected, boosting the body’s natural recovery process. Ideal for sun-damage, scarring, lines, wrinkles and pigmented lesions, and with the capacity to simultaneously rejuvenate the skin’s collagen matrix alongside the resurfacing process, these treatments can be used almost anywhere on the body and face.

Which body parts are they designed for?

Light and laser technologies are suitable for anywhere on the body that requires skin reconditioning, ranging from the face and chest (for anything from acne scarring and wrinkles to an intensive exfoliating treatment) to the removal of spider or thread veins on the legs, arms or face.

Read the above sections for more details on which treatments suit which areas of the body.

Who are they primarily good for?

The broad array of therapies involved with Sciton JOULE® Light & Laser Technologies makes them applicable to everyone.

How long will they last for and what’s the downtime?

ClearSilk®: as the gentlest of the laser and light treatments, there is usually no downtime associated with this therapy.

BBL® HEROic: expect some reddening and temporary darkening of pigmentation as it lifts, which tends to take just a few days.

ClearV®: skin can occasionally look slightly worse for a week or so as the intensive work of the lasers subsides before the skin improvement becomes evident.

HALO ®: This therapy generally requires seven to 10 days of downtime, and may result in some skin shedding.

ProFractional™ & ZoomScan ®: these therapies generally require one to two days of downtime, during which patients may experience sensitivity to sunlight and/or some minor peeling.

Please note that all treatment responses and recovery times are dependent on the individual patient.

What other treatments do they work well with?

What else should I know?

Some of these treatments, specifically HALO®, may require a topical anaesthetic. All the therapies will require a course of treatment.
