Microneedling magnified: tone, tighten and brighten

A crème de la crème radiofrequency microneedling treatment. Thanks to its controllable micro pulsing movements, unique cooling component and unprecedented mode of tackling pigmentation, there’s very little the VirtueRF can’t do. Whether it’s scars, wrinkles, stretch marks or even contouring and fat reduction, you can expect tightening, brightening, toning and generally fabulously revived skin.

Dr Sarah Tonks says...

“An amazing treatment for lifting, tightening, smoothing and even reducing fat, it’s a catch-all for everyone. Very often, people can’t quite tell what’s making them look older or more tired, but this treatment remedies all of those small issues that accumulate to cause a dip in confidence.”

What is it and how does it work?

The FDA-approved VirtueRF is a new, advanced form of radiofrequency microneedling, which uses fine needles to create tiny channels in the skin that trigger a wound-healing response, increasing collagen production and stimulating a subtle plumping effect. The radiofrequency (RF) aspect precisely adds the necessary heat needed to constrict underlying skin layers – smoothing lines and wrinkles.

Unlike similar treatments, in addition to the capacity for pulsing (which allows the treatment to be very sensitively controlled) the VirtueRF has completely unique cooling plates adjacent to the needles. The cooling calms the skin, enabling more power to be pulsed through the needles – key to performing treatments requiring a bigger energetic boost, such as a double chin reduction. That added ‘oomph’ makes it an especially effective tool for contouring, fat reduction and body treatments.

Three different attachments mean it can be easily adapted for use on different body parts, ranging from large areas, such as the buttocks or abdomen, to more intricate and detailed work, including acne scars and even on the eyelids.

Because the device strengthens the skin, rather than shattering the pigmentation, the VirtueRF also presents a paradigm shift in pigmentation reduction – delivering an important added bonus for overall skin health that makes it an essential part of our pigmentation reduction programme.

Patients only need to take a topical anaesthetic one hour before the treatment and (one of VirtueRF’s biggest selling points) rarely experience any downtime – also, thanks to the carefully controlled pulsing and neat cooling technology, there’s a distinct lack of pain, making for an ultra-comfortable experience.

Which body parts is it designed for?

Relevant to almost the entire body, the VirtueRF can be used for remedying scars, fine lines, wrinkles, stretch marks, facial contouring, reducing post-surgical scarring (this works especially well if it’s used very close to having surgery) and blasting small areas of body fat. Its capacity for delicate work means it can also be used on the eyelids, a major rarity.

Extremely safe, because it’s a highly controlled form of energy, and also because the technology serves to strengthen the skin instead of shattering the pigmentation (meaning darker pigmentation is prevented from showing through), it’s also ideal for patients concerned about treatments which have the potential to cause further discolouration.

Who is it primarily good for?

Echoing its wide-ranging uses across the body, VirtueRF is a treatment suitable for all people of any skin type (including black skin, which can often be intolerant to certain laser treatments) and all ages. It’s also an ideal treatment for people with active acne.

How long will it last for and what’s the downtime?

After an initial series of treatments (TLC recommends three in total, split across four weeks, with a top-up every six months) results can last for around six months, depending on the type of treatment and skin condition.

Downtime is minimal; expect only minor redness for a few hours post-treatment. However, patients should avoid any conventional skincare for the following 24-48 hours, excluding active ingredients recommended by TLC’s doctors.

Please note that all treatment responses and recovery times are dependent on the individual patient.

What other treatments does it work well with?

What else should I know?

These treatments, due to the involvement of prescription-only medicines, can only be performed in tandemaSome patients report experiencing a discouraging loss of fat, but this tends to be a consequence of a practitioner pulsing too much power through the needles, causing an unnecessary loss of natural volume – this will not happen at TLC. Your doctor or therapist will discuss your goals at length prior to treatment to avoid this happening. with full guidance from a TLC doctor.
