We know what you’re thinking, menopause for men!?
Male menopause is actually a thing, so it’s not just our lovely ladies that experience a major hormonal transition in mid-to-later life and here at TLC we’re here to help you get back on track and feel balanced inside.
Firstly, let’s dive into the basics. Male menopause, known as andropause in men, is much like going through puberty in the teenage years. But unlike puberty which gears our bodies up for reproduction, male menopause is the start of our reproductive system – and hormones – going through their natural decline. All animals are hardwired to go through hormonal changes throughout their lives, so the male menopause is completely normal – even if the way you’re feeling is far from it.
Every man will experience male menopause differently, meaning there’s not a ‘standard’ experience for it. However, common things to look out for include a loss of energy, a decline in muscle mass, a fuzzy head, a lack of sexual desire, and just not quite feeling full of beans. This is all down to testosterone gradually decreasing from the age of 30 by an average of 1% per year. So it really is a steady, natural decline – and might happen before you even notice it.
While testosterone levels for a man in his 20s might sit around 600-1,200, for a man over 40 this can sit around the 300 mark. This is considered a ‘normal’ level for that age, but it doesn’t mean you’re feeling pumped like you did in your earlier years. And with that number naturally lowering over the coming years, it’s time to take action so you can feel your fuller self again.
You’re not alone if you’ve read that diet and exercise can help boost testosterone levels. What we’ve found, though, is that diet and exercise can help maintain a ‘normal’ testosterone level, whereas we know that an ‘optimal’ level is much more beneficial for health and physical and mental well-being. Wouldn’t it be nice to feel as energetic as we did in our 20s?
So, how to get there: here at The Lovely Clinic, we offer a bioidentical hormone treatment for men going through the male menopause. Far from the scary hormone replacement therapies you might have read about, bioidentical hormones mimic the hormones we naturally produce in our bodies and behave in exactly the same way chemically as the hormones in our bodies. Our hormones are derived from plant sources too so you can be sure there are no nasties or unnatural chemicals in there.
We know the experience of male menopause is different for all of our lovely patients, so to work out the best treatment we’ll measure your testosterone levels and find a treatment plan that’s going to make you feel refreshed and vibrant.
