If you’re an avid reader of the TLC blog, or a patient at our Chelsea based aesthetics clinic, you will know how much we love PRP treatment.
PRP (also known as Platelet Rich Plasma or a Vampire Facial) became more widely known when Kim Kardashian shared pictures on her social media of her having the treatment. Before Kim made the Vampire facial famous, PRP was being used in traditional medicine to treat torn tendons, muscles and ligaments and was utilised by plastic surgeons to help accelerate healing after invasive cosmetic surgeries.
In aesthetics, PRP uses a patient’s own plasma (from their own blood), to rejuvenate and revitalise the skin and can even be used to help stimulate hair growth for patients who are experiencing hair thinning. It really is a unique way of kick starting collagen regeneration, by utilising the healing fluids from our own bodies.
What is PRF?
Aesthetics is a constantly evolving world and as science moves on, the medical cosmetic treatments that we can offer patients keep improving.
PRP has had a glow up. Here’s introducing PRF!
PRF is PRPs sister treatment. It stands for Platelet Rich Fibrin, and if you’re reading this article you’re early, since we haven’t seen any A-listers promoting it on their social media channels just yet!
Fibrin is a protein that is found in the body, has healing properties and helps to stimulate blood flow. PRF is similar to a PRP treatment in that it begins by taking the patient’s blood and putting it in a centrifuge to separate the different elements of the blood.
To create the Fibrin the process is different to the creation of PRP. The blood is spun without anticoagulants at a different speed and gives Fibrin which has different qualities to the plasma in PRP. For starters it has a different composition to plasma; plasma is a runnier substance and Fibrin is thicker. Fibrin also releases the growth factors over a longer period than PRP, to allow greater tissue regeneration.
The thickness of Fibrin means we can liken it to an all natural dermal filler that is biologically unique to each patient.
PRF is a growth factor rich substance and when it is injected it attaches to the extracellular matrix (ECM). The extracellular matrix is a network of proteins and molecules that give structure to the tissues and cells in the body, and is important for cell functionality.
PRF treatment helps to stimulate blood flow and growth factors while rebuilding collagen, leaving skin looking revitalised, refreshed and more radiant.
Where can PRF treatment be administered?
Like PRP, PRF can be injected in numerous places where there is a need to improve skin health or skin quality. At the Lovely Clinic in London we often treat patients’ faces with PRF, and it is particularly useful for treating around the eyes. It can be an alternative to tear trough filler for patients who want to use a regenerative treatment to smooth out hollow under eyes.
